1. ロック殿堂入りバンド
今回はElvis Costello & The Attractionsの「Pump It Up」を使っていきます。
Elvis Costello個人として有名です。
1954年にイングランドのリヴァプールで生まれ、仕事をしながらFlip Cityというバンドで活動しておりましたが、契約できたのはCostelloのみだったそうです。
芸名の「エルヴィス・コステロ」は、エルヴィス・プレスリーと、父方の祖母の旧姓コステロに由来しています。
Mr. Childrenの桜井さんも強く影響を受けたと言われています。
ラップのような歯切れの良さと、セクシーな歌声をぜひ聞いてみてください！

①on tenterhooks
気をもんで、不安で
【文章例】
I watched him on tenterhooks.
【意味】
私はハラハラしながら彼を見守った。
tenterhook：布地をテンターに固定するL字型のフック。
「テンター」とは織物を漂白，染色，あるいは精練する際に起る収縮を防ぐため，湿気を与えたうえで伸縮性を与え，幅などを整える幅出し機械。
らしいです。笑
↓こちら！なんか見たことある気がするやつですね。
比喩的な表現である「on tenterhooks」は、「苦痛な緊張状態にある」という意味で1748年に使用を確認されているようです。それ以前には「to be on tenters」（1530年代）という表現があったようです。
②pump it up
（液体など）吸い上げる、空気を入れる
【文章例】
I got a flat tire. I need to pump it up at a gas station.
【意味】
タイヤがパンクしてしまった。ガソリンスタンドで空気を入れなきゃ。
・inflate：〔空気・ガスなどで〕膨らませる、膨張させる
と同義です。
スラングの意味もいくつかありますが、紹介はしません！笑
気になる方は調べてください！笑
③underhand
(球技) 下手投げの
(手段・方法などが) 秘密に行われる、不正な、ずるい
【文章例】
He acquired money through underhand methods.
【意味】
彼は不正な手段でお金を手に入れました。
対義語としてはaboveboard (公明正大な)
類義語としてはclandestine (秘密の)
があります。
